What is the significance of the “facing” or “laminate” on some XPS products?

XPS boards are sometimes produced with a laminated facing to enhance performance for specific applications:

  • Polyethylene (PE) Film: A simple plastic film that provides a vapor retarder and protects the foam during handling. Often used for packaging.
  • Aluminum Foil Laminate: A reflective foil facing serves two main purposes:
    1. Radiant Barrier: Reflects radiant heat, significantly boosting the effective R-value in applications like attic spaces or behind radiators.
    2. Vapor Barrier: Provides an exceptional vapor barrier.
  • Non-Woven Fabric/Scrim: Adds surface toughness for improved handling and provides a “key” for plaster or stucco finishes (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems – EIFS).
  • Bituminous Coating: Used in below-grade or roofing applications for additional waterproofing and compatibility with bituminous adhesives or membranes.
