XPS is classified as a vapor retarder (often a Class II or Class I, depending on thickness). While it greatly resists vapor diffusion, it is not a perfect vapor barrier like a polyethylene sheet. Its vapor permeability decreases with increased thickness. Building science principles must be applied to ensure the assembly can dry appropriately.
