The primary hazards are manageable with proper precautions:
- Dust Inhalation: Cutting or sanding XPS creates fine polystyrene dust, which is an irritant. Always wear a NIOSH-approved dust mask (N95 or better), safety glasses, and work in a well-ventilated area.
- Fumes from Hot Cutting: Using a hot wire cutter or power tools at high speed can melt the foam, releasing styrene vapors and other decomposition products. These can be irritating and harmful in high concentrations. Ensure excellent ventilation and consider an organic vapor respirator for extensive hot-wire work.
- Sharp Tools: Use care with knives and saws.
The installed, undisturbed foam presents no health hazard. Always refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) for detailed handling and hazard information.
