Why are marine sandwich panels better than solid plywood in many boats?

Marine sandwich panels often outperform solid plywood because they provide comparable or better stiffness at a much lower mass. This allows naval architects to reduce top weight and improve vessel stability. Composite skins also resist moisture, rot, and corrosion better than wood-based products when properly specified. In passenger vessels, reduced weight can translate into fuel savings over many years. In interiors, sandwich panels may also provide cleaner finishes, easier modular fabrication, and integrated insulation. Plywood still has advantages in low-cost builds and traditional carpentry, but modern commercial and premium leisure craft increasingly choose sandwich systems.
